With all the people that have read this post, I can't believe that there are no comments. Doesn't this bother anyone? I mean Geez, this is 2012. Haven't we moved a little bit past gender bias?

However, there's a school of thought that argues that being the "fairer sex," women are less likely to "stand up for themselves" and therefore, bring the situation mentioned in the post upon themselves. I think this is "blaming the victim." What do YOU think?

Balancing work and school is always going to be an issue. I had the good fortune to work for an employer that more interested in my work results than how I actually spent my time. As long as I got the work out, I could spend any "extra" time on the job doing school work. I couldn't drag out my textbooks or do anything obvious (for fear of upsetting my fellow employees) but I could work on the computer.

If you're having a difficult time balancing school and work, make sure to talk to your employer and see if you both can come up with an arrangement that meets both your needs.

I read an interesting article a couple of years ago that basically blamed the entire near-collapse of the US financial system on what they called "MBA thinking." The premise was that many MBA's are taught various business models that may not be valid anymore. These business models become ingrained to the point that the MBA no longer questions them or their assumptions. When the economy started going into a tailspin, all these MBA's just kept upping their bets using the same models which just didn't work anymore.

The bottom line in books like this is that a business leader, whether or not they have an MBA, needs to use common sense about what needs to be done instead of blindly relying on a spreadsheet or business model they learned in Grad school.

Re: Mistake #3.
Focus is a big problem with any MBA student that is working full time and going to school part time. Balancing family, employer, and MBA program is not easy. I write about the work life balance issues and overall well being in several of my blog entries. You may want to review one of my entries, "MBA Family Work-Life Issues: Learning from Other MBAs’ Experiences" (http://blog.myeemba.com/2010/08/16/mba-family-work-life-issues-learning-from-other-mbas%E2%80%99-experiences/).

This is a great post that includes all the stuff I've been "preaching." First, you've got to ask yourself what your career and personal goals really are. Only then will you be able to figure out whether or not getting an MBA will help you reach those goals.
Cathy also places an emphasis on the networking opportunities. I agree 100%. Keep in mind that getting your MBA online means that you're going to have to work harder to network.

I just got through the verbal review sections. The book is very thourough, insightful and easy to follow. I feel more confident after having read through the verbal chapters. i also bought the Kaplan 2007-2008 Comprehensive review - I have hard time following it and remembering the material (twice I got headaches just going trhough it). I hope this feed back helps a little. Best of luck!

Awesome book! I purchased several MBA prep books and found this one to be by far the most helpful. One of the things I like most about it is that each chapter is a short, well written, easily digestible lesson. Very to the point, and very usable. As I was going through and drafting essays, I would refer back to lessons about leadership, extra-curriculars, and more, and immediately was able to apply what I learned into my writing.

Review by Jeff Sackmann for The MBA Application Roadmap: The Essential Guide to Getting into a Top Business School
Rating:
While I am a GMAT tutor and naturally focus solely on that part of the quest for business school admissions, it's important to keep the test in perspective. As big of a challenge as the exam can seem, it is only part of the MBA application process. Other aspects of the process, such as essays, can be every bit as challenging and time-consuming.

There are plenty of books on the market to help you get from "I want to go to B-School" to "I'm in!" but it wasn't until I recently read The MBA Application Roadmap that I found one I could enthusiastically endorse.

Authors Stacy Blackman and Daniel J. Brookings have put together a concise handbook that gives you a plan and then walks you through the steps required to get there. Blackman is well-known for her admissions consulting service, and her experience is evident throughout the book.

Most striking in the first several chapters of the book is the emphasis on getting started early. Blackman and Brookings encourage you to give yourself several months to research schools, prepare for and take the GMAT, draft essays, and manage recommenders.

The authors start from the very beginning, explaining the various factors that should go into your school selections. In my experience (and in theirs), too many students decide on one or two programs simply because of familiarity or a top ranking. Researching more possibilities will not only expand your options, but will also come in handy when tailoring your essays to each school's admissions committee.

Nearly half of the book is devoted to application essays, and this is where you'll find the most valuable advice. By necessity, most of the tips are general in nature, but regardless of your specific situation, you'll find plenty to help you improve your application package.

I wish I had always been able to point my students to this book, because it answers so many of the questions I've been hearing for years, including: How much should your essays be tailored for individual programs? Should you write an optional essay? How can you effectively handle topics such as your biggest weakness or failure? What tone should you strike in the essays?

The MBA Application Roadmap weighs in at well under 300 pages, and reads even faster than that. While it's very concise, that doesn't mean it's not valuable. Many of the strategies the authors share sound simple, but far too many B-School aspirants fail to use them. I don't want you to make the same mistake.

The book's content is divided into over fifty brief chapters, making it easy for you to use it as a reference guide. After an initial quick read (I went through it in about two hours), you'll go back to it many times as you choose target schools, draft essays, and put the finishing touches on your application package.

The book was good for a quick run of checklist if applicant really doesn't have much time. It gives another perspective of looking at the essays, profiles and issues.

I found this book while researching the MBA admissions process and continually finding articles written by its author, Stacy Blackman. I decided to look her up, and after reviewing her credentials and reading articles she's written, I decided to buy her book. I am SO glad I did! I came into this process not knowing at all what to expect, or how to make my admissions applications stand out. Once I started reading, I realized HOW much I didn't know! The MBA Application Roadmap walks you through the process from beginning to end, highlighting the most important elements of a successful application in a really user-friendly way. In retrospect, I don't know how I would have completed my application without it! It goes above and beyond simply explaining the process like some of the other books I looked into, and really focuses on how to make your application stand out. The advice and tips from the authors are great, and I truly received an insider's perspective on the admissions process. I used the book for every step of my application!

This book is chock-full of great advice and tips for mastering the MBA admissions application process. It helps you think about your application from a whole different perspective. It provides a great roadmap for branding yourself and includes tips on each phase of the process from school selection to essay writing to interviews. I highly recommend this book to anyone embarking on the application process.

Great book Very well written. Lots of good insight into the admissions process. The profiles are very detailed with quotes. AdmissionsConsultants spent a lot of time visiting these schools and doing thier research. The school selection tool has a lot of variables to choose from. You are not going to be able to quickly use it if you want to put thought into the process but thats the way it probably should be.

What a great book! It provides a perspective that other books miss with the focus on "fit" in determining your personal school rankings. I highly recommed this book to all MBA applicants who want to make sure that they focus their time, money, and energy on only the schools that are right for them.

This book gives you more in-depth reports (6-8 pages on each school) than any other MBA book out there. It's got all the info you might want about admissions, student life, academics, etc. I haven't tried the CD-ROM, but it looks like it would be useful in helping to choose an MBA program.

Keep in mind that these types of books attempt to provide you with the skill set of an MBA. However, the skill set is only half the picture. You need to know how to apply the skills as well. That's the advantage of actually taking the classes.

Still, books of this type are very good reference books if you need a specific tool for a specific problem.

Sure, you get bragging rights but Shawn brought up some very valid points as well. Getting a degree, any degree, shows the world that you at least put in the time, effort, and money to earn it.

Whether or not you actually learned anything along the way is kind of besides the point. The degree earns you the right to at least be heard.

My personal experience is that the real benefit from getting a degree is the person you become as a result of doing all the work.

This is a great book. If you think getting an MBA gets you an automatic ticket into the corner office, think again. You'll still have to learn how to work on a team, lead others, present your ideas, and back them up with real data. In the business world, getting an MBA is the easy part. This book will help prepare you for the rest.
