Let me weigh-in on this issue with my own opinions. First of all, the author of this article is primarily talking about MBA courses offered by schools in India. That should be pretty apparent. However, most of they points they make are still valid.

Although you can’t beat the convenience of an online-MBA program, it does make it difficult to get the 2 things I believe are the most important benefits of going through an MBA program in the first place:

Working in a team on a presentation and/or case study. Being part of a team that’s working on a strategy or business problem is one of the most beneficial ways to put what you learn in class (or online) into actual practice — and better to do this in a “safe” setting like a classroom than in an actual business setting with real dollars and careers on the line. In traditional classroom MBA programs, working on teams is part of the program. In an online program, it’s a little more difficult. Working with others “electronically” and over the Internet is OK but not the same as in person. You need to be aware of this and make an extra effort to compensate.
Building a “career network.” The team members you work on class problems and presentations with will become part of your career network down the line. Again, in a classroom setting, meeting and bonding with people that might be in a position to help (or hire) you in the future is easy. Online, you need to make a real effort.

For many people, taking 2 years to complete a traditional classroom MBA just isn’t an option. For them, an online MBA provides the perfect way to combine the various responsibilities of work, school, and home life. Just be sure not to cheat yourself out of the opportunity to learn from the others who are making the same journey you are.
